Eugh! Eastdene sewage woes linger

Frustrated residents are concerned about the sewage leak near the Eastdene Mosque, which has been leaking since January.

It’s been four months and counting, and the ongoing raw sewage spill in Eastdene has persisted.

Frustrated residents are concerned about the sewage leak near the Eastdene Mosque, which has been leaking since January.

Previously, the Middelburg Observer reported about a large portion of Litre Street being submerged in wastewater.

The Middelburg Observer spoke to William Mabena, a DA activist in Ward 10, about the matter.

He expressed concern about the area and its sewage woes, mentioning that he feared the environmental consequences of the spill in the Klein Olifants River and Loskop Dam.

According to a statement from DA constituency member Elsie Vermooten, raw sewage has been flowing since January, creating an unbearable stench and attracting insects, which pose a significant public health risk.

She said more than 20 complaints were submitted to the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality’s WhatsApp number, and phone calls were also made, but the matter remains unsolved.

Mabena also spoke about the clogged stormwater drains in Eastdene and broken streetlights on Pilodia Avenue.

The DA has requested an investigation into the matter and has offered civil engineers to assist the municipality at no cost.

• A media enquiry was sent to the municipality, but no comment was received before print.
