Three victims identified in Easter bloodbath
Three of the accident victims killed over the Easter weekend have been identified.
The Nkangala region recorded the highest death toll over Easter, with 14 fatalities reported in Middelburg and its surrounding areas.
Good Friday
Two Mozambican nationals were killed when the taxi they were travelling in lost control on the N4, resulting in the taxi rolling down an embankment. There were 13 other occupants injured.
The two passengers who died have been identified as Marlo José Cossa and Regina Macamo.
The accident took place on April 18 on the N4, 2km from the Middelburg Dam.
Easter Sunday (Observed)
A third victim has been identified as Ricardo Moraba from Middelburg.
Moraba, a pedestrian, was struck by a vehicle at the Middelburg off-ramp on the N4 on Monday.
Eleven unidentified
Eleven of the 14 victims remain unidentified at this stage.
• Seven people were killed in an accident on April 17 due to dense fog on the N4.
The accident was one of two multi-vehicle accidents, barely 2km apart.
The accident took place near Berg-en-Dal between Belfast and Machadodorp.
• Three more people, including a toddler, were killed in a collision on the R35 (Bethal) near the Broodsnyersplaas turn-off.
The accident took place on April 19 at roughly 19:00.
• Another single fatality was recorded on April 20 near Belfast.
One victim was killed in a head-on collision between a truck and light motor vehicle on the Stoffberg road, 10km outside Belfast.
The remaining 11 victims have not yet been identified.
More congestion expected
Another long weekend is upon us with thousands of visitors descending on Middelburg for the Loskop Marathon. Congestion can be expected on the roads for Monday.
