Middelburg plagued with pipe bursts, parts without water for four days

Large parts of Middelburg are suffering under ongoing pipe bursts, with some residents sitting without water for four days.

According to information shared on community WhatsApp groups, the affected areas include Aerorand, Kanonkop, Mineralia, Middelburg CBD, with certain parts of Groenkol having beein without water for four days.

DA Alderman San-Mari Wait, councillor for the Middelburg CBD area, confirmed the severity of water interruptions, adding that Groenkol has suffered most.

Wait added that Viljoen Street in CBD has reported 15 pipe bursts alone throughout the month.

“Bambanani Clinic has been without water for two days as well,” Wait added.

Additionally, water-meter thefts are picking up, with two thefts reported this week in Park- and Joubert Streets.

Another water-meter was stolen last week in Hibuscus Street as well.

“I haven’t received feedback from the municipality on what the causes are. I understand that the Department of Water and Sanitation is busy, but if only we receive feedback, we can calm down our residents by explaining what the issues are and how long restoration will take.”
