Police disperse Youth Day revellers after residents report gunshots
Families hide in homes as ‘gunshots’ end Kanonkop Youth Day celebrations.
Another public holiday ended in chaos after the police were dispatched to disperse rowdy crowds of openly intoxicated revellers celebrating Youth Day at Kees Taljaard Stadium yesterday.
Things went smoothly, with reported soccer matches scheduled, until around 16:00, when residents of Kanonkop started reporting gunshots.
The shots could be heard from around the first reports till almost 19:00.
WhatsApp groups started lighting up with complaints, which resulted in one of the Kanonkop/Dennesig groups visiting the stadium.
There, they found a huge party still in full swing.
Municipal vehicles were also reportedly at the venue.
According to the responders, revellers confirmed they were all aware of the shots being reported, but did not know what caused them.
People spoken to by the responders denied having seen any firearms.
Local CPF groups were also inundated with complaints, resulting in the police being dispatched to the area.
The crowd was warned to disperse or face arrest for public intoxication and disturbance.
Around 20:00, the noise started dying down, with revellers dispersing on the instructions of the police.
Regular police patrols were then maintained around the stadium for the rest of the night.
Residents, however, are not convinced that crackers are responsible for the bangs they heard.
The police reported no firearm incidents.
