Volvo truck hijacked, later found at truck stop sans trailers

Hijacked truck later found without trailers after driver is held hostage.

A truck driver was hijacked on Dr Mandela Drive Tuesday night, after noticing mechanical problems and pulling over to investigate.

The driver of the Volvo truck with registration HEL915FS, and two trailers with registration HWJ181FS and HWJ182FS, had just finished a drop-off at Columbus Stainless and were heading in the direction of Delmas, when the mechanical problem started.

He pulled over on Dr Mandela Drive, opposite Volvo Trucks, to investigate a sudden loss of air.

Two men suddenly appeared and started wrestling with the driver on the side of the road.

He valiantly fought back, but another two men then appeared, both armed with handguns.

The driver was instructed to get into the truck, where his hands and feet were bound with shoelaces.

The hijackers then drove off with the driver as their hostage.

Close to the One Stop Truck lot, the hijackers dropped the driver off alongside two of their accomplices.

They then disappeared with the truck and trailers.

Some time passed before the two watchdogs fled, leaving the driver behind.

The driver managed to untie himself and sought help at the nearby truck stop, where police were called.

A tracking company was also dispatched to help search for the missing truck.

The signal took them to one of the bays inside the very truck stop the driver approached for help.

The truck was recovered but both trailers were missing.

On inspection of truck’s cab, the driver found his bag of clothes, his firearm with 17 rounds, gun license, bank cards, drivers’ license and his cell phone gone.

The truck was taken to the police station and the stolen weapon was circulated.

The incident occurred shortly after 19:00.
