Boxer collapses after bout, undergoes emergency brain surgery
A Zimbabwean fighter remains in a critical condition after collapsing in the changing room following a bout at an international boxing tournament in Middelburg.
A participant in a boxing tournament collapsed in the changing room shortly after his fight on Friday evening in Middelburg, prompting an urgent medical response.
Paramedics on duty at the event stabilised Ndodana Ncube, a competitor from Zimbabwe, before rushing him to the King Nyabela Hospital.
Abram Lubisi, chief organiser of the boxing tournament, said that Ncube’s condition was critical and that he had not yet regained consciousness at this stage.
Lubisi confirmed that Ncube had been transferred to Witbank Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery last night to remove a blood clot.
According to information relayed to Lubisi, Ncube is under sedation to assist with his recovery.
Ncube’s family was notified shortly after he lost consciousness.
The incident occurred during an international tournament hosted on Friday evening by Ilanga Boxing Promotions, of which Lubisi is the CEO, in partnership with the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation. The tournament was held at the Eastdene Hall.
