Residents of Nasaret and surrounding areas are still being forced to cross a dangerous stream daily, months after a teenage girl drowned during heavy rains earlier this year.

During a visit to the site this week, DA PR councillor Morgan Bruiners warned that the situation remains extremely dangerous, particularly for schoolchildren who must cross the water to reach nearby homes and schools.

The Middelburg Observer reported on the tragedy that claimed the life of the young girl on New Year’s Day.
The councillor and concerned residents said that they want to highlight the urgent need for proper infrastructure in the community.
“We cannot allow another life to be lost here,” he said.

According to Bruiners, the community has repeatedly requested the construction of a bridge at the corner of Drosdy and Montagu streets leading towards Samrose Valley, but residents are still waiting for action.
He said the crossing becomes especially hazardous after heavy rainfall when the water level rises rapidly, and the current strengthens.
Bruiners called on the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality to urgently implement a solution, including the construction of a permanent bridge or a temporary crossing structure to ensure residents and schoolchildren can cross safely.

Community members from Nasaret, Extension 24, Rondebosch, and Samrose Valley have also voiced frustration over what they describe as years of unfulfilled promises regarding the bridge.
With schools already in session and rainy periods expected to continue, residents say urgent intervention is needed to prevent another tragedy.
