Level 4 Weather – Middelburg hit by sudden storms
Residents in Middelburg faced a rough night as sudden, intense thunderstorms moved through under a SAWS Level 4 warning.
The residents of Dennesig, Helen Joseph Street saw rapid water build-up as heavy rain fell in bursts.

Emergency crews, including the fire department, responded at several points, including Meyers Bridge, where visibility dropped and conditions turned dangerous.

Concerns are also rising at Cowen Ntuli Street, where the low-water bridge near Case & Isuzu is becoming risky. Residents say water levels are climbing fast, with calls to close the road before someone gets caught out.

Storms without warning
The South African Weather Service warned of severe storms across Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo, including heavy rain, strong winds and possible hail.

Conditions changed within minutes – clear roads turned risky as the rain intensified. Residents reported poor visibility, strong bursts of wind and sudden water surges in low-lying areas.
Officials warn that fast-moving water and low visibility are the biggest dangers.
What’s with the weather?
Late April usually brings calmer conditions, but lingering heat meeting cooler air is driving unstable weather. The result is fast, unpredictable storms that hit hard and without warning.

Stay alert, avoid low-lying roads and slow down in heavy rain.
