One sluice gate was opened this afternoon, residents are warned to stay away from the Klein Olifants River.

Middelburg Dam is overflowing after heavy rain pushed water levels above 102%, while flooded low bridges forced road closures in Middelburg.

The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, issued a notice to residents earlier today, Thursday, May 7, after our area experienced continuous rainfall recently, which pushed water levels to 102.54%.

A sluice gate was opened, slightly at 14:00 to manage the high levels of water inflow, with residents warned to stay away from the Klein Olifants River and nearby riverbanks.

Rainy weather conditions also caused flooding at the low-water bridges in Koppie Street and John Magagula Street, forcing road closures, according to the municipality.

Residents should not try and test the waters near riverbanks and motorists are urged to use alternative routes to avoid flooded areas, as rain continues across Middelburg.
