The Middelburg Flying Squad arrested two suspects along the N12 near the Phola/Ogies off-ramp last night (July 22), where they uncovered concealed rhino horns, a hunting rifle, and live ammunition.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspects, aged 45 and 49, were arrested at the scene.

Masondo said the patrol operation was conducted jointly by officers from the Phola Police Station and the Middelburg Flying Squad.

“On Wednesday, at approximately 23:45, police from Phola Police Station were on patrol on the N12 when they stopped a silver-grey Toyota Etios, with two occupants claiming to be driving from Mbombela to Johannesburg,” Masondo said.

He added that upon searching the vehicle, officers found two rhino horns, live ammunition, and a hunting rifle.

“They could not produce a permit for possession.”

The suspects face charges relating to the illegal possession of products from a protected animal, as well as the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They are expected to appear in the Ogies Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (July 24).
