Community celebrates Youth Games

The Glencore/Shanduka Soccer Tournament started in 2009 and the aim was to celebrate Youth Day which is celebrated on 16 June.

The tournament has grown in leaps and bounds to the very successful event it is today.

It all started with the Local Masters soccer teams from the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

Due to the success of the tournament in Mhluzi, the tournament shifted to the schools within the Greater Middelburg area; hence the name was changed to “Glencore/Shanduka Youth Games, which included coaching clinics as well as participation from netball teams from the community.

The main attraction of the 2012 Games was the invitation to Zone 14 – Tiger Boys (from SABC 1 fame) who took part in the games facing the mighty Shanduka Soccer Team.

In 2013, S.A Soccer Legends Team played against the now well established Shanduka Soccer Team. Together they successfully held a coaching clinic for aspiring soccer stars.

In 2014, the games were held at the Kwazamokhule Township Stadium.

Children from the local township were awestruck when Tiger Boys made their appearance.

The highlight of the day was the final match between Tiger Boys and Kwazamokhule Masters Team.

“A big thank you to Glencore and Steve Tshwete Local Municipality for making this successful day possible.”
