Swimmers make a big splash

The 2014 Mpumalanga Swimming Championship took place in Nelspruit. This is the season's premier gala for the province and is held over the course of three days.

More than 300 top swimmers from all over Mpumalanga, Mozambique, Limpopo and even Tuks swimming club, competed against each other for top positions in the province.

This annual event also serves as a stepping stone for young talent seeking future national level opportunities.

Uniswim Middelburg/Witbank had a total of 13 swimmers who competed and brought home a total of 36 medals – a haul that included 11 gold, 15 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Swimmers train very hard for a premier event like this and everyone was rewarded with swimming their own personal best times for the season.

Stephani Viljoen, competing in the 12 year old girls category, took part in 12 events ending the competition with 11 gold and a silver medal. She was also the junior Victrix Ludorum.

• For the first time in decades Nkangala swimming is hosting two official galas in Middelburg. The gala dates are 7 February and 20-21 Feb 2015. All swimmers are welcome. Entries can be sent to uniswim.midwit@gmail.com.
