Video: Mpumalanga Tour cyclists ride through town

The Mpumalanga Tour started today (12 January) with a leg from Loskop that passed through Middelburg and continues to 17 January 2017.

It is the only six day road cycle challenge in South Africa. The six daily stages covers a total distance of 752 km from Loskopdam to Badplaas, Mbombela, Graskop and Blyde River Canyon.

Cyclists will have to take up the challenge of facing a total climb of 11 514m, with Robbers Pass and Kowyn’s Pass as the most famous and gruelling mountain climbs.

Tackling the Kranspoort Pass on the first stage will set the pace and provide the ideal warm-up for the rest of the Tour.

The Organisers effectively created an equal ground for cyclists of levels of skill and age to experience the murderous mountain climbs and steep downhills in a safe environment.

Residents witnessed first hand the action when the elite group of cyclist passed through Middelburg from Protea and Meyer Streets onto Cowen Ntuli Street as they made their way past Midway Hotel en-route to Badplaas.

•The Amateur Tour from Middelburg to Badplaas started at the Midway Hotel at 9:00 Wednesday morning.
