Gary Player withdrew membership in 90’s after ‘whites only’ decision

Golf legend Gary Player, might once again become an honorary member at the Middelburg Country Club.

He was awarded honorary membership after helping to design the golf course.

During turbulent political times in the 90’s, Player decided to withdrew his membership in protest of a decision by the golf section of the club, not to allow people of colour.

Rumours have recently surfaced from local golf inner circles, of attempts to reinstate Player’s status at the Country Club.

If it succeeds, it might serve to finally heal old political wounds.

• Player was responsible for the design of the back nine holes in 1972. The second part of the course was inaugurated on 14 April 1973.

• A photo was taken of Player wearing his Middelburg Country Club jacket at the St Andrew’s Golf Course in Scotland.
