Buses collide, two dead

Two people died in a head-on collision between two buses on the Goedehoop road outside Blinkpan on Tuesday morning 02 August.

The buses collided on a newly tarred stretch of the road which is being reconstructed on the Vandyksdrift route.

According to the SAPS the driver of the smaller Quantum sprinter collided with a hi-occupancy Tilly’s passenger bus shortly before 06:00.

A passenger of the Tilly’s bus died on impact alongside the driver of the Quantum.

Four passengers from both buses were seriously injured while 50 others were treated for minor injuries.

The road had to be closed for emergency and recovery personnel to clear the chaotic scene.

It is suspected that the multiple road signs which have been erected alongside the construction route, had caused confusion with one of the drivers, leading to the accident.

The deceased had not been formally identified according to police.

The SAPS confirmed that the sprinter was ferrying workers to Andrew Mining while workers en route to Kriel, occupied the Tilly’s bus.
