Video: N11 barricaded
Turned over dustbins, bricks on the tarmac and hundreds of protesters singing and chanting struggle songs was the site from 5:00 this morning on the N11 as Extension 24 residents went on a rampage.
The protesters barricaded the N11 to prevent taxi’s from going into the area to pick up commuters. One car was damage.
Residents were prevented from going to work and school children were also stopped from going to school.
There was a high police presence.
“The purpose of the riot is to get the Steve Tshwete Municipality to intervene as the Nasaret District Taxi Association (NDTA) only has Nasaret taxi owners and none from Rockdale, Extension 24 or Hlalamnandi.
We have raised other concerns with the municipality such as a need for a mobile clinic in the area, ” said Patrick Mogwane, one of the leaders.
“We are tired of the poor service operation within the NDTA, we have been in talks with the association for the past three years but it has yielded no results.”
The protesters handed over a memorandum to Mr Philele Nkosi of the Municipality and gave them a period of seven days to respond to it.
Some protesters have since departed but no taxi movement is visible.
