Observer scoops great awards!

The Middelburg Observer team scooped most of the journalism categories during the annual Caxton Awards that was held at the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg.

Johann Gresse was crowned Photographer of The Year, received the prize for the best headline writer and was highly commended as sports writer.

Best Written Large sized Ad:
Finalist Minette de Beer (Goodluck Cravenweek).
Sold Newspaper 8000 plus:
Finalist Middelburg Observer.

Best Regular Column:
Winner: Tobie van den Bergh. The judges comment: Tobie’s Sonja Herholdt column was a masterpiece.
There is a huge interest and entertainment factor in his columns and he grabs
the readers’ attention from start to finish.

Best Sports Writing:
Johan Gresse Highly Commended.
Best Investigative reporting:

Winner: Jana Boshoff. The judges said this piece was
the light at the end of a dark tunnel! They loved the prostitution story and
agreed that while it is prevalent across South Africa, never before had it been
exposed in this manner. Jana went the extra mile. A good story by an impressive
writer and hard worker.

Best Headline Writing:
Winner: Johann Gresse. The judges said: Johann shows a wonderful ability to play with words and his headlines are clever, well thought out and entertaining.

Most Promising Journalist:
Finalist: Naledi Malekane.

Journalist of the Year:
Highly Commended: Jana Boshoff.

Best Feature Photograph:
Jana Boshoff (Die trekpad) finalist.

Best Portrait Photograph:

•The judges said Susan was professional, very efficient and spoke with a clear, friendly voice. She was not only very knowledgeable about her own area but able to give the callers information regarding Johannesburg and faxed all the requested contact details 10 minutes later.
