Paul Dumont seizes Tour du Faso lead

South Africa's Tshenolo Pro Cycling Team faces an uphill battle with two stages remaining to erase a narrow 26-second deficit.

After eight days of intense cycling, during which Gustav Basson’s Tshenolo Pro Cycling Team successfully fended off challenges from rival teams, the team finally lost its grip on the lead during the eighth stage of the Tour du Faso yesterday, November 6.

The new race leader is Paul Dumont of Burkina Faso, who finished third in the eighth stage, gaining enough time to move into the overall lead.

Basson finished 25th.

Thokozani Mahlangu, who had worked tirelessly to help keep Basson at the top of the standings, finished 47th, while teammate Daniyal Matthews placed 48th.

Two stages left to strike back

Stage 9 takes place today, November 7, with riders tackling a 167.8km flat road race from Tenkodogo to Ziniaré.

With two stages remaining in the Tour du Faso, all is certainly not lost for Basson. He trails Dumont by just 26 seconds, with Youssef Bdadou a further three seconds behind him.
