Oskido’s hard work pays off

MIDRAND Reporter spoke to Oscar Mdlongwa, famously known as Oskido, about his music and recent award.

Oskido was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award at the 13th Metro FM Music Awards on 1 March.

A well-known Midrand resident and co-founder of Kalawa Jazmee Records, Oskido has contributed immensely to many artists in the South African music industry for years. The story of South African music can not be told without mentioning his name. Born in Brits and growing up in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, he later moved to South Africa, where he began working as a DJ at nightclubs. He now has over 10 years’ experience as a radio personality.

Oskido said his perseverance is what made his career a success. “My hard work and perseverance paid off… I have produced many artists such as Mafikizolo, Uhuru and Winnie Khumalo who are quite successful musicians in their own right.”

Asked how he felt when he won the Lifetime Achievement award, Oskido said, “It was such a nice surprise, I was honoured to receive the award.”

Speaking about the challenges facing South African musicians he said, “It would be great to have an association that protects musicians’ rights, to avoid them being exploited.”

Oskido added, “Anyone who wants to make a career in music must be passionate and keep knocking on every door for opportunities; one door will open.”

Oskido’s latest offering is called Ngoku featuring Busiswa, on the Oskido I believe special edition CD.
