Shoot-out ensues following hijacking on Allandale Road

MIDRAND – The Midrand police have opened a case of attempted murder and hijacking following a shootout with six suspects on Allandale Road.

Police are investigating a case of hijacking and attempted murder that took place on Allandale Road on 15 October this year.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Sergeant Thabiso Selowa said a 29-year-old driver for a courier company was driving from Woodmead to Midrand with three colleagues in the car. The driver missed the off-ramp and decided to make a U-turn in Midrand.

Selowa added that as the courier driver stopped at the robots at the intersection of K101 and Allandale Road, six armed suspects driving in four vehicles stopped the driver, pointed their firearms at him and forced the occupants out of the vehicle. The suspects then got into the vehicle and sped off.

Soon after, the suspects noticed a marked police vehicle approaching the traffic lights. Selowa said the police vehicle with three officers inside and returning from Ivory Park, noticed the commotion and became suspicious.

The suspects began shooting at the police vehicle with the officers returning fire. “The suspects managed to jump into their vehicles and sped off. Two of the suspects managed to drive the hijacked courier vehicle for about 600m but could not go far as the police were closing in on them. They then abandoned the vehicle in the middle of the road and the vehicle rolled back into the ditch causing slight damages.”

The suspects fled the scene. None were arrested and no injuries were sustained during the incident. A 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene which has been linked to a crime that occurred in Boksburg in 2015. A case of hijacking and attempted murder has been opened and police are currently investigating the incident.
