Scout makes library for New Life Centre for Girls
Seventeen-year-old scout David Robson transformed a room at New Life Centre for Girls into a library as part of his 40-hour community service project with the 1st Halfway House Scout Troop.
A passion for giving back and a love for reading inspired 17-year-old Scout David Robson to build a library for the New Life Centre for Girls as part of his 40-hour community service project with the 1st Halfway House Scout Troop.
The project started when David approached Khopotso Nakin, also called Mama K, who is the director of New Life Centre for Girls, about what help they needed at the centre. He was shown two projects that he could work on, but David was more interested in the one that involved transforming an entire room to make it a library for the young girls.

Although both Mama K and David agreed that transforming the room into a library seemed hard at first, seeing it in real time is definitely fulfilling.
As a member of the 1st Halfway House Scout Troop, this initiative forms part of David’s community service requirements for Scouts, encouraging young people to make a meaningful and lasting impact in their communities. By creating the library, David hopes to provide the girls with a safe and inspiring space, where they can develop a love for books, while supporting their education and personal growth, which is something Mama K wishes for.

David said completing the project was both rewarding and meaningful. “I’m very happy that it’s all done now. It looks amazing and it’s great. I wouldn’t have done it without my fellow scout members, and I am grateful for their help in making this project come to life.”
Mama K expressed her appreciation towards David for this heart-warming act of kindness. “I believe that children need a library to study. To empower themselves, so that they can become good leaders. So, I really want to thank David for starting something that has always been a dream for me.”
The 1st Halfway House Scout Troop encourages its members to develop leadership skills, serve their communities, and make a positive difference through projects that leave a lasting legacy.
David’s library project is expected to benefit generations of girls at the centre, leaving a legacy the young girls will experience and cherish.
