Ivory Park seniors enjoy being honoured by City of Johannesburg for Mandela Day

The senior citizens were celebrated through health screenings, food donations, a warm meal and words of appreciation for their loving presence in society.

The spirit of Nelson Mandela Day came alive at Lord Khanyile Community Hall as the City of Johannesburg hosted a special event dedicated to celebrating and honouring senior citizens from the Ivory Park community.

The initiative brought together elderly residents for the day to focus on their health and wellness, reflecting the legacy of service and compassion left by the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

The day started with the senior citizens participating in an aerobics session; thereafter, they received free health screenings conducted by healthcare professionals, allowing them to monitor their well-being and receive basic health advice.

City of Johannesburg Region A Regional director, Papi Macmillan Telekoa, gave a speech to the elders, explaining the purpose of the event and why it was important for them to dedicate the day to the senior citizens of Ivory Park.

“We are here to honour Nelson Mandela Day, where we are trying to use our 67 minutes fruitfully by assisting and supporting you as our senior citizens.

“Tata Madiba set out a path for us to follow, and to follow it, we saw it fit to honour and appreciate you as our senior citizens because the work that you do and the part you play to keep our communities together does not go unnoticed,” added Telekoa.

The event also included food donations from the City to assist the elderly residents with their greater daily financial challenges.

The hall was then filled with singing and dancing as the City’s MMC for Development Planning, Eunice Mgcina, gave a message of support to the elders of Ivory Park.

This celebration served as a reminder of the important role senior citizens continue to play in society and highlighted the City’s commitment to recognising and supporting the elderly.

By dedicating time and resources to the elderly on Mandela Day, the City strengthened the message from Mandela that giving back goes beyond charitable donations and includes caring for the well-being, dignity and happiness of those who have contributed so much to their communities.
