Sandton police spokesperson Captain Kym Cloete said she can confirm the black Golf GTI is connected with hijacking incidents in the northern suburbs, in which the suspects pose as police officers. She said although detectives of the Sandton police do use blue lights on unmarked vehicles, they never use that make and model of vehicle.
Although the license plate number has also been circulated, she said that it was a cloned plate, meaning that the number is registered to another motorist with no connection to the suspects.
She advised the public to proceed to the nearest police station or service station if this vehicle should request them to pull over or if they feel unsafe in similar circumstances. She said most service stations have CCTV cameras and police can look at the footage after an incident. The public are also advised to call 10111 or their sector patrol vehicles directly so that a marked police car can be dispatched to the scene.
