Summerhill’s shy poetry star

MIDRAND - Summerhill Preparatory School pupil, Khai Veal, was the recipient of a prestigious award from the National Eisteddfod Academy.

Every year the academy invites aspiring young performers to take part in their annual competition.

The categories cover song, dance, poetry and instrumental performances. Veal performed the poem ‘I bought my cat a jet pack’ by Ken Nesbitt and won the Grade 4 solo poetry category.

It is an amazing feat, considering he was once very shy and decided to take part in the competition to boost his confidence. “In Grade one I didn’t even want to do the school play,” Veal admitted.

Veal’s school is very proud of him. Vice-principle, Renate Knott says, “His achievement is outstanding! I definitely think he has the ability to take his talent further.”

When asked how it felt to win, he replied,”I was very excited. I didn’t even know I won until my mom told me!”
