Lawyer defeats ends of justice

MIDRAND - The Midrand Police Station has lodged a formal complaint with the National Director of Public Prosecution against a corrupt lawyer.

The lawyer has been preying on people who have been arrested for drunken driving and other smaller offences.

Midrand station commander Colonel Steven Moodley said, “Midrand residents are warned to be on alert as there is a corrupt lawyer operating in Midrand. The lawyer and some corrupt police officers have been extorting money from people arrested and their families.” Moodley added, “The lawyer impersonated a public prosecutor and tried to extort R2500 from the family of an arrested person. When confronted he admitted that he was not a prosecutor but a lawyer.”

“The case has been reported to the Law Society of South Africa. A formal complaint has been lodged with the National Director of Public Prosecution against the lawyer for defeating the ends of justice. The suspect has not been arrested yet. We are waiting for a decision from the director of public prosecution on whether to prosecute the lawyer for the crimes committed,” Moodley said.
