Garage Robbery leads to arrest

NOORDWYK - On 22 October a robbery occurred at the Engen Garage on the corner of Lever and Coubrugh roads in Noordwvyk.

Constable Matome Tlamela said, “The complainant was on duty when five men entered the garage. Two of the suspects went straight to the tills and pointed firearms at the Engen staff behind the tills. The other three suspects opened tills and took money.

“One of the robbers hit the complainant on the head and the suspects climbed into a white Mazda that was waiting on Lever Road. R5 000 cash was stolen and a cellphone.”

The owner of the vehicle told police that the suspects had kidnapped him. However, he was arrested after giving contradictory statements of the accounts of his kidnapping.

Tlamela said, “He tried to open a false case. He has been arrested for business robbery.”

Engen spokesperson Bulelwa Payi said, “It is unfortunate that a crime was committed at one of our branches. We are tirelessly committed to ensuring safety at the forecourts. Our staff have been re-trained on emergency preparedness.

Our dealers work closely with local police stations to encourage visibility at all the sites. The police are investigating the matter.”
