Randela Technical and Vocational Training College is the brainchild of Alex Ndhlovu and Dewald Niemandt, directors of the college, to teach more school leavers motor mechanical skills. The college recently received its Gauteng Department of Education certificate and Ndhlovu is excited to start attracting students. It has the capacity to hold 50 students.
Ndhlovu said, “I am an engineer by profession but I saw a need for skills development so I have decided to teach others the skills I have in the hope of uplifting and empowering young people so that they can find employment. This college is a big opportunity to empower people and we hope many students will use us in order to develop their mechanical, automotive and auto-electrical skills. The college is open to all school leavers, with or without a matric certificate, as well as unemployed youth and semi-skilled labourers who want to advance their careers.”
Ndhlovu is backed by practical and theoretical training, while Niemandt is a trained artisan, and the students will learn in an active workshop on clients’ vehicles at Gallagher Corner. Ndhlovu believes the students will receive high quality training.
Students can opt for a basic skills, two-week course or a more intense six-week course, depending on the skills they wish to develop. Ndhlovu said the courses were short ‘crash’ programmes to help students develop skills quickly and receive a certificate so they could find a job. He said students with certificates from the college would be able to approach large car workshops or even start up their own businesses as they would learn about entrepreneurship. The college has set up a block system for students to rotate and learn various skills with special advanced diagnostic equipment. He said the students would be required to write an exam after each unit standard.
“We do not want anyone to feel deprived of acquiring skills, so there are opportunities available for students to acquire funding for their studies. We want students to approach us so we can help them to build their skills,” added Ndhlovu.
