A candidate’s mind over matter

NOORDWYK - Muhammed Fuzail Mia believes that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, and now, he is focused on the Mr India South Africa 2013 competition.

Mia is one of 21 finalists and will find out if he will win the title on 21 December.

A driving force to enter the competition was to teach young people this motto and to share his zest for life.

Mia said, “I want to give back the core value of knowledge. I want to use this value to show people how to understand each other, and [together] as one we can help society.”

The Durban-born competitor, who has been living in Johannesburg since 2011, explained part of the requirements of Mr India South Africa was to be driven to help those in need.

Mia has already lent his efforts to helping young people as he is part of a non-profit organisation that helps Grade 3 pupils in Diepsloot. Every Saturday he has been helping the children with their English studies, as well as fixing the school’s buildings. “This has been the most humbling experience for me, and all it takes is dedicating three hours of my Saturday. These children see it as a privilege and are hungry for knowledge.”

Mia added that the potential Mr India South Africa winner must have a combination of charm, be reasonably good looking, well-educated, and have great conversation skills. Mia describes himself as a self-motivated go-getter, while at the same time being down-to-earth.

The contestants are also encouraged to appreciate Indian arts and culture, and during the competition he did a presentation on the city of Jaipur, known as the ‘Pink City’ in India.

The competition has also inspired Mia to eat healthy food and exercise with a personal trainer.

“[It] has been quite challenging thus far, but I am enjoying every moment. I want to build great relationships […] which will allow me to give back to our community,” he added.

He also thanked his parents, siblings, friends and colleagues for their support. Mia works as an accountant while he studies to obtain a London qualification.

“Each morning when I enter work my team responds with ‘Good morning Mr India South Africa’. This is a great way to start a morning of work,” he quipped.

“The road to success is not an easy road, and will require much dedication no matter what situation you are in,” he concluded.
