Johannesburg Water outlines progress on three major Midrand water projects

Johannesburg Water has provided an update on three major Midrand projects, with the Carlswald reservoir at 25% complete, the Erand tower project at 95% complete, but suspended, and the Blue Hills tower still in planning.

Johannesburg Water continues to make steady progress on key water infrastructure projects in Midrand, including the Carlswald reservoir, the Erand tower and pump station, and the Blue Hills tower.

This signals the continued investment in the region’s water network and laying the foundation for a more reliable and resilient water supply for residents and businesses.

The projects are aimed at improving water supply reliability, increasing and strengthening storage capacity, and supporting future growth in the region.

The water entity states that construction of the new 20ML Carlswald reservoir is progressing well, and is currently 25% complete. Key milestones achieved include site establishment, construction of access roads, reservoir layer works, blinding of the reservoir, and the foundation of the valve building. The project remains on schedule for completion in July 2027.

The supply zone includes Barbeque Downs, as well as its extensions Beaulieu, Blue Hills, Carlswald Estate, Crowthorne A.H, Glenferness, Glenferness Extension 1, Kyalami A.H, Kyalami Estate, Kyalami Ext 1, Kyalami Gardens, Kyalami Heights, Kyalami Hills, Kyalami Parks, and Willaway.

The new Erand tower and pump station project is designed to augment the capacity of the existing Erand reservoir complex, by providing additional storage and pumping infrastructure.

The new Erand tower project is approximately 95% complete, but has been temporarily suspended after the allocated contract budget was exhausted.

The depletion of the allocated budget resulted from unforeseen technical and site-related conditions encountered during implementation, together with the need to comply with applicable regulatory and environmental requirements and associated project cost escalations.

Johannesburg Water has initiated the statutory approval process in terms of Section 116(3) of the Municipal Finance Management Act to secure approval for additional funding.

Subject to the successful completion of the public participation and approval process, construction is expected to resume within the next three months.

This construction forms part of Johannesburg Water’s reservoir storage upgrade programme. The new pump stations house four pumps each, with a head of 37m drawing water from the existing 25ML reservoir and delivering to both the new and existing water towers.

This infrastructure will boost water supply for customers in the supply zone, which includes Erand Gardens (including its various extensions), Halfway Gardens, Midridge Park, Noordwyk, Sagewood Ext 22, Carlswald Estate, and the surrounding residential and commercial developments connected to these distribution mains.

According to the statement released by Johannesburg Water on August 13, the Blue Hills tower project is currently in the planning phase, with the land acquisition process underway.

Johannesburg Water has instructed the Johannesburg Property Company to appoint a land valuer to support the land procurement process.

The supply zone for Blue Hills tower includes areas like Blue Hills, Blue Hills Agricultural Holdings (AH), Blue Hills Extensions, Summerset and its extensions, as well as the associated residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments connected to these distribution mains.

These projects form part of Johannesburg Water’s ongoing investment in strengthening water infrastructure to meet the growing demand across Midrand and surrounding communities.
