Midrand police communications officer Constable Matome Tlamela said, “The awareness campaign is in line with the national calendar projects to eradicate the abuse of women, children and senior citizens.”
Police handed out pamphlets with personal safety tips and educated the community on how to break the silence on domestic violence and sexual offences, and how to report such cases.
The day was held during the 16 Days of Activism, which runs until 10 December. Midrand police warn that domestic violence is a pattern of behaviour which involves the abuse of one partner by another in an intimate relationship such as marriage, co-habitation, dating or within the family. It can occur in many forms. All forms of domestic abuse have one purpose: to gain and maintain control over the victim. Both men and women can be victims of domestic violence. Midrand police have a domestic violence and victim empowerment co-ordinator, Constable Belebesi Nanty, who the community can contact.
