12 December, 10.21am:
The driver accused of killing five runners on Lever Road in Midrand in 2011 was sentenced to 12 years in prison and had his drivers’ licence cancelled.
The trial, which took place in the Pretoria High Court, concluded on 11 December with the sentencing.
The incident was dubbed Midrand 5 for the five runners who lost their lives, while a sixth was injured. They were training for the Soweto Marathon.
It was reported the driver, Sibusiso Langa, did not show emotion during the sentencing, in which the judge, Bert Bam found Langa guilty of five counts of culpable homicide and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol but was acquitted on a charge of attempting to murder the only surviving jogger.
Bam said the evidence revealed that Lange was driving on the wrong side of the road when the incident occurred, and that he only started braking after he hit the joggers.
Bam also said that he was driving 113km per hour in a 60km per hour zone.
There was a mixed response on Twitter where some people were relieved the trial was over, some were thankful for the sentencing, while others were outraged that Langa only received a 12-year sentence.
