Crime victims have safe haven

MIDRAND - The Victim Empowerment Centre, based at the Midrand Police Station and overseen by Nicola Arend, aims to facilitate access to a range of services for all people living or working in Midrand who have been traumatised by violence and crime.

Midrand police communications officer Constable Matome Tlamela said, “Focus in the past was on the movement of offenders through the criminal justice system, and while this is critical, serving the needs of the victim is vital too. Invariably, this victim-centred approach can result in a decline of victimisation, while simultaneously improving service standards in the system.”

She said trauma counsellors at Midrand Victim Empowerment Centre see a wide range of victims of crime and violence who have a diversity of needs, and they assist them in their struggle to overcome reactions of fear, anger, guilt and shame, and offer opportunities to access relevant services.

Trauma counsellors are available by appointment six days a week (not on Sundays), and offer free confidential trauma debriefing.

Details: To arrange counselling, contact Nicola Arend, 084 454 4411 or to leave a message, contact the counselling room, 011 347 1653.
