Chana’s management team said in spite of it all, they hope for an amicable resolution.
Spokesperson for his management team Sheila Afari said, “In light of the shooting of Khuli Chana that took place on 28 October, 2013 in Midrand, the lawyers have indicated that the case will take both a criminal and civil course.
“As part of the due process in the civil case, Khuli Chana’s lawyers submitted a letter to the minister of police outlining costs incurred and income lost as a result of the shooting. We stated that we intend to recoup the money via litigation.
“We do however remain hopeful that an amicable resolution of this painful episode can still be reached.”
On 10 January, Chana’s lawyers handed over a letter to Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa outlining the reasons for the total amount of R2.7 million. Reasons being medical expenses, damages, loss of earnings, legal expenses and car repairs. The South African Police Service has 30 days to respond.
Police maintain it was a case of mistaken identity. Chana was shot on the hand and back at a Caltex Garage in Midrand. Police had been chasing kidnap suspects who were using the Caltex garage as a ransom drop-off point. For the full story, click here
