New Green school a relief

MIDRAND - National government, provincial government and local government representatives came to witness the official opening of Noordwyk Secondary School.

The school is part of project to build 27 new schools in Gauteng.

MEC for Human Settlements in Gauteng, Ntombi Mekgwe and Deputy Minister in the Presidency for performance, monitoring and evaluation, Obed Bapela officially opened the school.

Mekgwe said, “We are excited to have a school that will educate learners and also conserve energy. We expect a lot from Noordwyk Secondary School, we want to have a 100 percent matric pass, not zero percent.”

Bapela said, “It is exciting to see that government and communities are working together to further education. Noordwyk Secondary School will shape the lives of future leaders.”

The school principal, Leonard Mckay promised that, “The teaching staff and the parents will work together to make sure that the learners achieve excellent results in all their areas of learning. We are excited about the learning and sporting facilities we have at the school.

“The school has a combined sports facility for basketball, tennis and other sports and can be used as a tennis court. It also has a sports field that can be used for soccer and rugby.”

Ward 112 councillor Leverne Young also attended the opening. “This school is a huge milestone for the Midrand area,” said Young. “Midrand High School was over capacitated, now there is another school that can take in more learners.”

The school was constructed using environmentally friendly methods. The construction company’s senior project manager, Justina Manthlasi said, “We put in an insulated ceiling to control temperature, put tinted windows to protect learners from direct light of the sun. We also installed solar panels that provide 50 percent power.”
