Guards robbed of firearms

HALFWAY HOUSE - Security officers were robbed of their service firearms while on duty at a premises on the K101 in Halfway House.

Midrand police communications officer Constable Matome Tlamela said, “According to the complainant, while he was working with his colleague, the electric fence’s power box stopped working. His colleague went out to check what the problem was, leaving the complainant in the guardroom.

“Suddenly the complainant was surprised by two unknown armed men, who pointed a firearm at him and took his work [service] firearm and cellphone.” The incident took place on 13 January, just after midnight.

Tlamela said that after robbing the complainant, the suspects tied him up with his belt and locked him inside the guardhouse’s bathroom.

The complainant was left alone but was able to free himself and escape through the bathroom window.

“He found his colleague lying on the ground, tied up with cable ties,” said Tlamela.

Midrand police issued a warning that armed security officers are advised to be vigilant at all the times.
