A former pupil of the school, who did not want to be named, said a teacher whose name has been withheld likes to dictate what ethnic hairstyles can or cannot be worn. The former pupil told the Midrand Reporter that since 2011 the teacher, whose name is known to the paper, disapproves of afro hairstyles and tells pupils to use hair straighteners as afro hairstyles can be untidy. According to the ex-pupil the school has banned dreadlocks and weaves. Nokwazi Ndlovu, a parent on one of the pupils at the school said, “I support the school’s policy to not allow weaves, but they must also not allow other pupils to colour hair and have fancy hair cuts, so that it is balanced,” she said. “My daughter wanted a weave and I told her it will never happen.” The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Lesego Masemola said such complaints were common. “Each school has its own code of conduct in consultation with the parents, but it must not make pupils lives difficult,” said Masemola. “We will definitely investigate the issue, we have the teacher’s name. If the code of conduct is found to be
discriminatory, corrective measures will be taken.”
