Station manager Abigail Milosevich said the focus on owls was not because they are endangered. She said, “We are excited about the owl project and we have put up two owl boxes at Nokuphila School in Ivory Park, with the help of Owl Rescue Centre. Owl boxes assist with breeding, and the control of snakes and rats in the area.”
Milosevich said that they would put up to 20 owl boxes in schools and communities in Midrand by the end of 2014.
Owl Rescue Centre representative Brendan Murray told Midrand Reporter that there are two endangered owl species in South Africa. “Only the the grass owl and Pel’s fishing owls are endangered. The rest of owls in the country are not.”
Murray stated that in Midrand two species are common, “Barn owls and spotted eagle owls are seen a lot in the Midrand area. The best thing about building owl boxes is that it encourages owls to stay, owls do not build nests like other birds.”
