Car jamming on rise at Midway Mews

Midrand - In two separate incidents, Gerald Jaggers and Loshnee Iyer told Midrand Reporter that they were victims of car jamming at Midway Mews shopping centre.

Jaggers said on 14 March at 6pm his property was stolen. “My laptop, bag, and identity documents were stolen from my car while my vehicle was parked in front of a car guard. The car guard said he did not see anything and said that theft out of cars is a daily occurrence at the centre.

“The centre management should put up a [clear sign] about car jamming and thefts to warn residents using the shopping centre.”

Iyer said she was also a victim of crime at Midway Mews shopping centre. “On 4 April I was a victim of car jamming at the centre. My car was parked right in front of the car guards. My laptop was stolen from my car. I did not report it to the police but this is not the first time I have heard of car jamming and theft out of vehicles at that shopping centre.”

A property manager from Broll properties, Natasha Atkins said she manages Midway Mews and the company has received similar complaints before. “Incidents of car jamming have been rife at Midway Mews. We have car guards who are visible at all times at the centre and have an anti-jamming device that notifies them of any car jamming devices within a certain radius” she said.

“We will look into upgrading our security system. We ask that residents double-check manually that their vehicles are locked before they walk away and not to leave any valuables lying on car seats as this would draw the attention of criminals.”

Atkins added that people do not report crimes. “Midrand police have told us that there are not many reports of car jamming and theft out of motor vehicles at Midway Mews reported. Please report crimes so that we know how many occurrences there are in that centre and how best to curb such crimes,” she said.

Midrand police spokesperson Matome Tlamela confirmed that a case was opened. “Gerald Jaggers opened a case at the police station after his laptop was stolen from his vehicle. Residents need to report such cases so that we can alert everyone about certain crimes in that area.”
