De Wet’s husband (82) was at his Hampton Road home when four armed men entered the property at about 10.30am on 7 April. They broke the security gate and the domestic worker who was washing clothes saw them. Midrand police communications officer, Constable Matome Tlamela said the domestic worker informed the complainant that men were on the property and he armed himself.
“When he reached the exit door, four armed men grabbed him and took his firearm. They started hitting him with the firearm and asked for money and keys to the safe. He told them the keys were with is wife,” said Tlamela.
De Wet said they hit her husband on his back and ribs and made him lie on the floor. The suspects threatened the domestic worker with a crowbar, holding it to her throat. She got lose and ran to the neighbours.
She said the neighbour fired warning shots and the suspects ran out by the gate, stealing a firearm and cell phone.
De Wet extended thanks to Warrant Officer Makwela who arrived at the scene swiftly after she called him and extended a warning of the crime in the area and cautioned residents to be careful.
