Police honour men promoting safety

MIDRAND - Midrand police honoured volunteers for their outstanding work in the Midrand area.

Men as Safety Promoters (Masp) members from Midrand and Rabie Ridge were awarded with certificates on 15 May after completing a two-day course in April. The course included many subjects such as domestic violence, gender-based violence, child neglect and exploitation.

Midrand station commander Colonel Steven Moodley congratulated the safety promoters on completing the course. He said men must not shy away from reporting crime committed against them. “At Midrand Police Station we will take action against any police officer who laughs at a man reporting a case of domestic violence. Men as Safety Promoters is a platform that the men in communities can use to stand up against crimes against men, women and children,” Moodley said.

While Rabie Ridge station commander Colonel Phostick Maoto said Masp members should make people in the community feel safe. “The new safety members must take the knowledge they were taught to the communities and influence the communities positively” he said.

“Do not turn a blind eye to domestic violence towards any man, woman and child.”

A graduate of the Masp programme, Johannes Mafotsa said, “I am thankful for the training, now I can confidently contribute more to my community and tell men and women that violence is never the answer.”

Men as Safety Promoters provincial deputy chairperson Malesela Senosha said the graduates had done well in completing the course. “Now we have people who can go back to the communities and tell other men that they should not be shy to report any cases of domestic violence against them.”

Women from the Rabie Ridge Women Safety desk attended the ceremony to show support for the new Masp members.
