Cleaning toilets to help pupils

MIDRAND - Armed with hygiene products, brushes and mops, a non-profit organisation is teaching pupils about good hygiene and clean environments, but they need the community's support.

Life 4 U Foundation has cleaned the toilets of five Ivory Park Schools and has helped to educate the pupils on why hygiene is important.

Chairperson of the organisation, Mpho Mofokeng explained that pupils at many of the schools did not value the importance of keeping their toilets clean.

The organisation visited Equinisweni Secondary School in Ivory Park and while Mofokeng said the toilets were not nearly as bad as the toilets in other schools, the organisation’s 10 volunteers set to work quickly.

Mofokeng said the organisation provided food and transport to the volunteers, but could not pay them. The volunteers were just happy to have something to do as they said they get bored sitting at home without jobs to go to.

The school’s president, Grade 10 pupil Rhulani Chauke and Grade 8 pupil Karabo Makabate, a keen environmentalist, said they appreciated the volunteers cleaning the school’s toilets and recognised the importance of maintaining cleanliness.

Life 4 U Foundation’s project manager, Simon Molekwa said the organisation was in need of more cleaning agents and hoped a company or individuals in the community could help to sponsor products so they could help as many schools as possible.

They are also looking for sponsors to help feed the volunteers.
