Lock before you shop

MIDRAND - Police issued another warning that theft out of motor vehicles in the parking areas of shopping malls in Midrand is on the rise.

Midrand police communications officer, Constable Matome Tlamela said, “In most of the cases that are reported, the complainant will state that when they parked their cars they locked all doors and windows properly before they left their vehicles.”

She said on 16 May, the operational commander of Midrand police, Captain Lionel Chetty was on duty patrolling around the shopping malls. “The captain noticed that people leave their vehicles unattended and locked, but with the windows slightly open while they shop in the malls,” said Tlamela. “The captain checked several vehicles at the parking lot if they were locked and about three vehicles were left unlocked by their owners.”

She said Chetty safeguarded the vehicles until the owners returned and pointed out their negligence.

“This raises a concern that our community are more concerned to do their shopping than to keep their property safe,” said Tlamela. “This kind of negligence is badly increasing crime at the shopping malls and garages.”
