Top graduate award

MIDRAND- Midrand Graduate Institute student, Jay Tawanda Kanjere believes the starting point to any achievement is diligence.

For Kanjere, this philosophy has paid off after he recently received the top student award at the institute. He graduated with an 80 percent average while studying for a Bachelor of Business Administation at Midrand Graduate Institute last year.

“My mom rushed to the front and gave me a hug after I received the award,”‘ he said. “Words can’t express the kind of joy I felt, but I was really chuffed. My siblings also had kind words of congratulations, as well as a number of my cousins and friends, for which I was grateful.” He received a Pearson book prize, a trophy and prize money.

Kanjere is from Harare, Zimbabwe and completed his primary and secondary school education there. He registered at the institute in 2010 for a pre-degree programme.

He then chose his degree as he has a genuine interest in business, and he wanted to learn the overview of different management levels in organisations. This year Kanjere is studying towards his honours degree in business management at Wits University.

His future plans include starting his own business, but for now he hopes to learn more and expose himself to daily practices of organisations.

“I also intend on studying further so that I am continuously expanding on what I know, and to be more effective in the work place. Also, certain senior positions in most organisations can only be attained when one has relevant higher-level qualifications,” said Kanjere.

His advice to students who want to achieve as he did is to attend all classes, work hard and have self-belief. “Be intentional about the marks that you want to achieve then have corresponding efforts to realise your goals,” said Kanjere.

His secret to success is also to read motivational books to familiarise himself with how other people see the world. “You can latch onto the principles that have guided others to success and practice the same principles in your own life,” he said.
