Student exposes organisation’s good work

MIDRAND - A third year student at Midrand Graduate Institute is raising awareness for non-profit organisation Ambassadors Youth and Community Development.

Tanaka Makeba is studying business administration and is majoring in public relations and marketing and she came across the organisation and decided to lend a helping hand.

She was touched by the organisation’s work of empowering young people, but she noticed that the public was not aware of them as they did not receive much publicity.

Which is why she decided to step in. Now she will be helping the organisation to reach around 300 schools from July to October in an awareness campaign. Among the schools the organisation will visit are Ponelopele Oracle Secondary, Blue High College and Noordwyk High. She said the organisation would give motivational talks to the pupils and at the same time the organisation would get exposure as it is in need of sponsorhip.

Makeba said the aim of the organisation, founded on strong values and principles, was to help the development of the youth. It aims to develop their competence and embed the strong values and principles in them through mentoring.

It has helped young people find jobs and trains them to become leaders. It also informs them on environmental issues, HIV/Aids and promotes healthy lifestyles and sustainable development within communities.

Makeba said during the publicity campaign the organisation would spread this message to pupils, “We all have talents and we are all capable of being successful whether you are smart or not. Ambassadors Youth and Community Development is there to help you in every way they can to make you realise your talent and self worth.” She believed the motivational talks would help to make individuals think positively. She said there would also be a leadership conference held on 25 to 26 July for Midrand youth in Pretoria, with transport provided.

Makeba envisions her work with the organisation to be long-term, even after she has completed her studies.
