The Noordwyk resident and Grade 12 pupil appeared in front of managers and record label executives in the Applause Rising Talent showcase in Orlando, Florida, as well as in a sightseeing show in New York in June. Rikhotso said there were 50 other South African contestants and they competed with 250 other contestants from various countries.
Rikhotso said he has a true passion for singing and acting. “I want to prove that youth in South Africa can make their dreams possible. No one can stop you, get a solid education and follow your dreams,” he added.
He got five call backs and a scholarship opportunity. “The most exciting being one with Icon Studios in America, to help take my performing skills to the next level,” he said.
Rikhotso added that, through the trip, he has learnt a lot about the entertainment industry and what it takes to be a success. He is looking forward to starting his career in South Africa and also get exposure to take over the international scene.
Rikhotso’s parents, Jamela and Clement Rikhotso, said they are proud of their son, that he took the trip for his self-growth and exposure. “We are supportive of his journey running concurrent with getting quality education at the school he attends.”
A drama teacher at Christ Church College, Deborah Da Cruz said Rikhotso is an exceptional pupil who also is head of drama for the school. She said, “He is an emerging artist in performing arts. He is musically and theatrically talented, with a great voice and presence on stage.”
Da Cruz said the school is proud of Rikhotso and the opportunities his talent has availed him.
