Clamping down on crime in Barbeque Downs

BARBEQUE DOWNS - Barbeque Downs Community is highlighting residents' crime concerns, following a recent robbery at a complex in the suburb.

As reported by Fourways Review a robbery took place at a complex on Montrose Road. Although the robbery had been confirmed as an “inside job” incident that happened in broad daylight, the major issues surrounding security and crime prevention are still a concern. According to Barbeque Downs Community chairperson Candice James, this has raised some questions, specifically surrounding crime prevention and future plans for the area.

“The two core tactics for the area needed are the booming of the area completely, as this would ultimately cut the crime statistics down as the security measures will be stricter…. Secondly, motorbike patrols are needed to get to scenes easier and provide faster responses for incidents,” said James.

She argued that the community and residents of the area need to be more involved and proactive.

James added security companies also have a big role to play in alleviating the crime statistics in the area: Seven Arrows, ADT and Tactical Response Services have all displayed major presences in the area by holding marketing campaigns to inform residents on their services. The Barbeque Downs Community has contacted all major security companies in the area and has asked for necessary quotations to upgrade the area’s security systems and measures for the future.

Constable Belebetsi of Midrand police added that residents need to be more vigilant with regards to their personal security. Furthermore, weekly meetings are held at the Midrand Police Station with security companies, to strategise on how to alleviate and prevent future crime in the area.
