“Our school had a visit from the Ivory Park Basic Emergency Safety and Fire Education (BESAFE) and the children had a wonderful experience with the fire engine.”
She said the team taught children all they needed to know to stay safe. “Children got to crawl on their knees and go under an imaginary cloud of smoke and roll on the floor to practise how to put out the fire from their burning clothes.”
She added that the school is thankful for the teams’ effort to teach children to stay safe.
Ivory Park fire educations’ public information, education and relations officer Esther Zwane said children learn the emergency number easily. “Adults seem to forget the number a lot but children learn and keep it. This will keep them safe in cases of emergency.”
Zwane said everyone must know the emergency numbers. “From a cellphone dial 112, and from a land line dial 10177.”
She explained that the department teaches fire, water and life safety tips to schools and members of the community and equips them with the knowledge they need in case of emergency.
