VIDEO: Suspects unknowingly filmed while in a vehicle

GLEN AUSTIN - The Hawks confronted five bogus police officers operating in Midrand in the early hours of the morning on 3 September.

UPDATE: 4 September, 3.30pm:

Andre Snyman of eBlockwatch said the hijackers who appeared on YouTube made the mistake of trying to smack the camera.

“The camera in the vehicle they hijacked is a vibration camera. It is used for accidents, once they hit the camera it started recording them instead of shutting down.”

Snyman said they are waiting for police to confirm if the hijackers in the video are the same as the bogus police suspects. “The two incidents happened a day apart, same mode of operation, there are too many similarities.”

Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramakolo said, “The Hawks will look at the video and analyse it to see if the suspects in both incidents were the same people.

UPDATE: 4 September, 2.30pm:

Hawks spokesperson, Paul Ramoloko said bogus police suspects, who were expected to appear at the Midrand Magistrates’ Court, will now appear at another court.

“The information we had was that the suspects will appear at Midrand Magistrates’ Court but one will appear on 5 September at Wynberg Magistrates’ Court. The other two suspects are still being treated at a hospital and will appear in absentia.”

UPDATE: 3 September, 1.30pm:

Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the court case for the three suspects in the bogus cops case would begin in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on 4 September.

However, Ramaloko said the appearance of the three suspects in court would depend on their health as they were admitted to hospital following their arrest on 3 September.

The three suspects were arrested by the Hawks in Glen Austin at the corner of George and Old Pretoria roads in the early hours of the morning on 3 September. Two of the suspects were shot dead in the confrontation with the Hawks.

Ramaloko said two of the five suspects were real police officers and that the suspects were attempting to hijack a truck. It is believed that they are part of a blue-light gang involved in many crimes.

It was reported a Hawks officer narrowly escaped being shot in the face.

It was also reported three suspects were wearing police uniform, two were in civilian clothing and one was wearing a police bulletproof vest. A report said the men were disguised as the provinical K9 unit.

3 September, 11.30am:

George Road by Old Pretoria Road is closed to traffic after a shootout between the Hawks and bogus cops in the early hours of 3 September. It was suspected that they were attempting to hijack a truck.

Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko was reported as saying two of the cops were serving police officers.

It was also reported that the bogus cops were suspected truck hijackers. Car jamming devices and other equipment that was believed to be used in hijackings were found in the fake police vehicle, which reportedly had fake registration plates.

It was also reported that it was unclear whether the officers were part of a larger syndicate of bogus cops.
