Mothers get life-saving tips

MIDRAND - Baby Adventure Land, a preschool in Vorna Valley, had their annual parents day on 13 September.

The day was marked by a special visit from a Netcare911 paramedic who was there to demonstrate a few life-saving tips for both parents and children.

Tarryn Griffiths went to the school to demonstrate cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). She said, “The most important acronym parents should have left with from the lesson is safety, awake, breathing, chest compression [sabc].”

She explained the importance of sabc.

S stands for safety. Before administering medical attention to the patient, it is important to ensure that the patient and yourself are in a safe environment.

A stands for awake. If the patient isn’t awake, move on to B.

B is for breathing. If they aren’t breathing, perform C.

C is chest compression.

After the demonstration, parents had the opportunity to ask questions. “The input and questions I received from the parents were relevant and good questions,” said Griffiths.

“[Griffiths’] talk was quite informative. Especially with a child in the house. It was helpful,” said Munzhedzi Makhuvha, mom to Khodani Makhuvha (5).

The school’s owner, Liana van der Ryst, said she took the suggestion to have Netcare911 do a presentation for them from a parent.

“It is precautionary for parents to have this information,” she said.
