Young minds clash as Midrand Chess Club hosts April juniors tournament

With strong performances already recorded this year, the upcoming Midrand Chess Club’s Juniors Rapid and Blitz Tournament is expected to raise the bar as players continue to develop.

Young chess players from across Midrand are preparing to test their skills once again as Midrand Chess Club hosts its Juniors Rapid and Blitz Tournament on April 25.

The event, set to take place at Halfway House Primary School, forms part of the club’s ongoing monthly tournaments aimed at developing young talent as the sport continues to gain momentum in the community. This will be the club’s fourth tournament of the year, with young players encouraged to register and take part.

Club coach Kgosimang Molefe emphasised the importance of consistent competition in shaping well-rounded players. “These tournaments are critical for practical growth. Formats like 3+2 and 5+2 expose players to real-game pressure, sharpening their decision-making and time management skills. The main lesson is resilience. Learning to adapt, stay focused, and improve with every round.”

The tournament will feature six rounds of rapid, five minutes initial time, plus two seconds added per move, and six rounds of blitz, three minutes, receiving a two-second increment added to their clock after every move, with medals and trophies up for grabs across various age groups.

According to Molefe, regular tournaments improve skill and help build a competitive culture among young players. “Monthly competitions create rhythm and keep players engaged. We are seeing steady progress, with our juniors gaining valuable experience.”

Beyond competition, the club continues to face challenges, particularly around funding and resources. Molefe said that while support from Gauteng sport has been valuable, additional sponsorship is needed to expand opportunities and improve equipment. “We are grateful for the support we have, but we are always looking for more partners to help us grow and reach more young players.”

Looking ahead, the club is set to launch an online beginners’ chess bootcamp starting May 4. The programme is designed to introduce newcomers to the fundamentals of the game, with a focus on basic principles, simple tactics, and guided practice. “Online training makes chess more accessible. Beginners often feel intimidated, so this creates a comfortable space where they can learn at their own pace and build confidence.”

With growing participation, improved structure, and rising performance levels, the April tournament is expected to deliver stronger competition as Midrand’s young chess community continues to develop.
